Chris Luckman

Chris Luckman grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the USA, and is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art. She continued her study of painting at Art New England in Bennington, Vermont, and at the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo, Maryland. After retiring from a successful art teaching career, she now maintains a studio in Takoma Park, Maryland. She has also traveled widely in five continents and is involved in several organizations which promote peace and cross cultural understanding through the arts. The following is her statement about her work:

“My work is a reflection of my personal experiences and perceptions of my surroundings, both here and in my travels, surroundings which I find filled with color and beauty. Since my retirement in 2008, I undertook a series of trips to find out what life was like in different parts of the world. My landscapes and architectural studies are the culmination of my visual journey from here to the corners of the earth. Everywhere I went, I experienced friendliness and a deep sense of peace, despite the news reports in our troubled world. With a strong interest in cross cultural understanding, I would like to share my rich and colorful travel experiences through my paintings. I believe that the arts transcend all languages and cultures.

“I am a ‘realist’ with a leaning towards abstraction. Inspired by the Post Impressionists and the Fauves, I seek a dynamic interplay of color relationships using good design and composition. I look for subject matter that calls to me from the unique character of the place I am visiting. I first begin a painting on location, gathering the information I need to design the composition and record the colors. I often photograph the site for future reference. Then I complete the painting in my studio where I seek inspiration to capture the atmosphere and memory of my experience of the spot, developing the painting into my own personal expression.”

Chris exhibits her work locally and nationally.
